We are working to regenerate rainforests through large-scale tree plantings, with a focus on biodiversity and the protection of threatened species.

We’re now planting in North Sumatra, Indonesia!

140,000 trees have been planted in collaboration with the Orangutan Information Centre (OIC), in one of the richest rainforest ecosystems in the world.

Gunung Leuser National Park is a global biodiversity hotspot - home to an unfathomable number of species - and the only place on Earth where orangutans, tigers, rhinos and elephants coexist in the wild.

CEO update

24 October, 2024

The year is wrapping up with the succesful growth and maintenance of our largest project in Clunes, NSW (Banyula) to the site capture stage. Our first two projects in Sumatra were a success with 140 000 trees growing without weed competition and already reaching good heights in the Gunung Leuser National Park.

Many small projects within a few hundred kilometres of our base of Byron Bay continue every week with many new landholders coming on board for regen and planting. We have also launched the FAME Enrichment Program that sees ecologists survey and improve regrowth forests with many more suitable species and ecosystem structure.

The start of 2025 will see huge new plans for Sumatra with our National Park border project that will combine rainforest, fruit, medicinal and spice trees utilised for a multipurpose and sustainable approach. We aim to plant a further 250 000 trees in Australia by July 2025.

"Many Trees"

We've embarked on what might be Australia's largest and most diverse rainforest reforestation project. In close collaboration with the landholder, we have planted 290,000 trees of 192 native species.

Located in Northern NSW, the plantings extend from Booyong Nature Reserve - a remnant of the critically endangered "Big Scrub" ecosystem and home to an array of threatened flora and fauna.

We are proud of what we have achieved so far together, but our efforts continue - including the ongoing maintenance of these trees for up to 5 years.

From bushfires...

In 2022, our region suffered from its worst flood in recorded history. It devastated our community and many staff lost their homes and possessions.

Thank you to our thoughtful partner, Talenza, for raising funds to aid and speed up the recovery of our flood-affected staff.

More than a third of NSW rainforest was hit by fire in the catastrophic 2019-20 season. Many old growth trees were burnt in ancient refugia and already vulnerable species were impacted.

Ecosia responded to this climate disaster by teaming up with us to replant fire-affected areas.
