Closing walking tracks and restoring rainforest in prime Cassowary habitat.

Ecological importance

Mossman Gorge is one of the highest conservation value areas in the wet tropics, second part of site had to be modified with drainage swales as illegal clearing and levelling of the area turned it into a flood plain post cane farming. Existing creek lines in the site were presumedly destroyed at some point. Now restored and weeds eliminated.

Site considerations

Tracks left open that come off the tourist tracks expose cassowaries to direct human interaction, these are being closed to reduce feeding, which leads cassowaries onto roads and towards car strike and dog attack on young fatalities
