World Cassowary Day

Garrus the Cassowary at Benella Rainforest Reserve in Cape Tribulation, Daintree

ReForest Now is working to enhance and expand Cassowary habitat in the Daintree. On the 24th of September every year, we organise; accommodation, transport, food, tour guiding, education and a tree planting festival in the Daintree for World Cassowary Day. These events are for volunteers, both local/interstate and also international. 2018 will be our third World Cassowary Day tree planting since we started in 2016.

World Cassowary Day plans for 2018

-bookings nearly full-

ReForest Now is currently taking bookings for Australia wide volunteers to come stay in the Daintree from the 21st of September to the 28th.

Our agenda includes

*Day trip to Mossman Gorge

*Two to Three day tree planting festival - pristine rainforest water holes onsite at tree planting

*Hike in ancient rainforest to swimming holes and/or mountain top views

*Accomodation, food, transport, tour guiding and education

The highlighted areas at Cape Tribulation show access tracks that we will use to reach grass paddocks and clearings in the middle of Cassowary habitat. Several of the access tracks will also be closed by volunteers by planting trees on the 24th of September, 2018.

World Cassowary Day 2016/2017

Between our 2016 and 2017 World Cassowary Day plantings, we have planted approx. 4000 trees across these two sites in Cape Tribution in the Daintree.

Plantings are being done to close up paddocks and dirt roads inside critical Cassowary habitat.

All of our planting locations receive regular visitation by Cassowaries (as noted by direct sightings, scats, track marks and calls). Every square foot that we plant already belongs to a local Cassowary, less grass and dirt tracks - more habitat!

World Cassowary Day volunteers stay with Rainforest Trust Australia in Cape Tribulation at Benella Rainforest Reserve.

Here at Benella, they are very likely to sight Garrus and his chicks (pictured).

Some of our volunteers from World Cassowary Day 2017, 2750 trees planted in three days!
